New European project aims to bring antibiotic treatment closer to home
AT-HOME is a new European research project funded under the Transforming Health and Care Systemes (THCS 2025) initiative. The project is led by Erasmus MC University Medical Center, and the consortium includes researchers from universities, hospitals, nursing organizations, and representatives from the pharmaceutical industry and patient associations in Belgium, Spain, Sweden, and the Netherlands. The Swedish project lead is Thomas Tängdén from Uppsala University, and Forte is the national funding body to the parts of the project carried out in Sweden.
The aim of AT-HOME is to make intravenous antibiotic treatment at home more effective, safe, and patient-friendly. By combining model-informed precision dosing (MIPD) with simplified sampling (Dried Blood Spot, DBS), patients can take their own samples at home with a simple finger prick. This reduces the need for hospital visits and makes care more accessible.
AT-HOME will evaluate the method with a focus on care quality, cost-effectiveness, and patient satisfaction. The results will pave the way for future, more person-centered home care and contribute to a sustainable healthcare system in Europe.
The project aligns with Platinea’s efforts to promote more effective, individualized, and sustainable use of antibiotics. For more information about the project: JTC 2025 - Better care closer to home: Enhancing primary and community care
