Platinea participants publish a letter to the editor in the Scandinavian Journal of Primary Health Care about antibiotic availability in the Nordic region

Håkan Hanberger, Anders Ternhag, Enrico Baraldi, Sofia Wagrell and Charlotta Edlund, all current or previously involved in the management team of Platinea, have published a letter to the editor in the Scandinavian Journal of Primary Health Care.

The authors discuss how the availability of antibiotics can be strengthened in the Nordic market related to a recently published article by Plejdrup et al (2024). Plejdrup et al’s article writes about a standardized recommendation for phenoxymethylpenicillin (PcV) in the Nordic countries for patients with acute pneumonia. Platinea's report is highlighted in the article regarding the fragmentation the Nordic antibiotic market (read the report), for instance in terms of various strengths and package sizes prescribed in different countries.

While harmonizing strengths and package sizes, for instance in recommendations for PcV, can address short-terms shortages, the authors argue that reducing long-term shortages of critical antibiotics requires increasing production capacity in the Nordic countries by creating a capacity for production preparedness, a solution currently discussed within Platinea. Read the letter in its entirety (English only).
