Suggested studies can improve the use of antibiotics

Unnecessary or incorrect use of antibiotics leads to a greater risk of developing resistance and reduced ability to treat infections. The development of new antibiotics is slow, which makes it important to improve access to and use of existing preparations. Many antibiotics that are widely used today were approved at a time when the requirements for documentation were lower.

In 2014, the Public Health Agency of Sweden received a government mandate to be responsible for investigating and evaluating the use of existing antibiotics. The goal was to generate new knowledge with the aim of optimizing, for example, dosage, preparation selection, new indications and load on the microbiota. The authority has now for the second time asked the health and medical services about the state of knowledge in the area and compiled a list of identified knowledge gaps as well as proposals for studies.
