Updated priority list of antibiotic products at risk of shortage

The Public Health Agency of Sweden has updated its priority list of antibiotic products at risk of insufficient availability in Sweden. The list aims to support measures that strengthen access to important antibiotics and help prevent product withdrawals and shortage situations.
The list has been published on several occasions, most recently in 2022, and has been highlighted by authorities, healthcare providers, and the pharmaceutical industry as a useful tool.
The analysis focuses on low-selling antibiotic products that are nevertheless considered to have high clinical value. The latest update highlights that formulations intended for children are given particularly high priority.
The list includes antibiotics used for common infections as well as products that are essential for the treatment of less common conditions.
The clinical assessment was carried out in collaboration with an external advisory expert group and is based, among other things, on clinical value and the potential consequences for healthcare if products are not available. The assessment showed, for example, that formulations aimed for treatment of children are given high priority.
