The pandemic is teaching us to counter antibiotic shortages
Covid-19 investments can become a model - A European fund to stimulate antibiotic research according to the corona model. It was one of many proposals discussed at a seminar on Tuesday.
Antibiotic shortages and antibiotic resistance are, like the corona pandemic, serious public health threats. But the fight to keep antibiotic treatment working has not sparked the same powerful mobilization in society that the pandemic has done in a short time.
- "I have never seen anything like the total mobilization that we have seen in the EU and the world to get access to vaccines against covid-19. There are several parts of this work that we can be inspired by also in the work to increase the availability of antibiotics."
This was said by Sweden's national vaccine coordinator Richard Bergström at a seminar on Tuesday. The seminar was arranged by the Apotekarsocieteten and the coordination platform PLATINEA. 130 participants gathered digitally to discuss how the lessons learned from the corona crisis can contribute to reducing the problems in the area of antibiotics.
